Palm Oil Sourcing: Meeting Sustainability Demands While Controlling Costs

Monday, October 19th, 2026

Palm oil remains a key ingredient for food manufacturers, particularly in bakery, confectionery, instant noodles and snack production. For ASEAN processors, however, managing this versatile ingredient increasingly involves more than securing competitive prices. Supply resilience, traceability and sustainability requirements are also shaping procurement decisions.

Future Market Insights (FMI) reported that the global palm oil market will grow from US$76.8 billion in 2025 to US$119.1 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5%. Food and beverage applications are projected to account for 73.1% of the market in 2025, underscoring the ingredient’s importance to food manufacturing. FMI

Yet demand growth does not eliminate supply-chain risks. In October 2026, Reuters reported on how Indonesia and Malaysia are approaching sustainability and traceability challenges differently as the European Union’s deforestation rules affect palm oil supply chains. For manufacturers exporting to regulated markets, demonstrating where ingredients originate and maintaining reliable supplier documentation can become commercially important.

Manufacturers should therefore treat palm oil procurement as a strategic function rather than a price-driven purchasing exercise. Mapping exposure by product line, monitoring supplier concentration and reviewing inventory requirements can help identify vulnerabilities before they disrupt production. Buyers should also assess suppliers’ traceability systems and sustainability credentials against the requirements of their customers and destination markets.

Reformulation may offer another option, but replacing palm oil or changing grades requires careful evaluation of frying performance, texture, shelf life and total production costs.

For ASEAN manufacturers, the priority is to balance cost competitiveness with supply continuity and verifiable sourcing. A more structured procurement strategy can help protect margins while keeping products and supply chains ready for evolving market expectations.
