Indonesia Extends Halal Certification Timeline for Selected Food Sectors

Monday, October 19th, 2026

Indonesia has extended the transition period for mandatory halal certification across selected product and service categories to October 2028, giving food businesses and overseas suppliers more time to prepare for compliance.

The government announced the adjustment ahead of the original 18 October 2026 deadline. According to Indonesian media, the changes will be made through an amendment to Government Regulation No. 42/2024 on Halal Product Assurance, following consideration of the readiness of businesses and the national halal ecosystem.

For overseas suppliers, mandatory halal certification for imported food, beverages, slaughtered products and slaughtering services is scheduled to begin on 18 October 2028. The adjustment takes into account the completion of mutual-recognition agreements for halal certification. Domestic micro and small enterprises receive an extended transition period until 17 October 2028 for food, beverages, slaughtered products and slaughtering services.

The revised timeline also extends the transition period until 17 October 2028 for natural medicines, quasi-drugs, health supplements, cosmetics, chemical products, genetically engineered products and certain consumer goods previously scheduled for compliance by 2026. Other product categories retain their existing timelines.

For manufacturers exporting to Indonesia, the extension offers additional time to review ingredient specifications, supplier documentation and certification arrangements with importers and local partners. Businesses should confirm whether their products fall within the affected categories and whether existing certificates will be recognised under the applicable Indonesian requirements.

The government says the adjustment is intended to support business readiness, maintain trade flows and strengthen consumer protection. Manufacturers should monitor publication of the amended regulation and related implementing rules before changing their compliance plans.
