Can Lactose-Free Dairy Unlock New Growth For ASEAN Manufacturers?

Monday, October 19th, 2026

Lactose-free products offer dairy manufacturers an opportunity to reach consumers seeking digestive comfort without giving up familiar dairy foods. For ASEAN manufacturers, where lactose intolerance is a relevant consideration in product development, the category could support portfolio expansion—but commercial success will depend on more than consumer interest alone.

According to an October 2026 report by Future Market Insights (FMI), the global lactose-free products market will grow from US$14.8 billion in 2025 to US$26 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate of 5.8%. Milk, yoghurt, cheese and ice cream are among the categories covered by the report. FMI

The opportunity extends beyond conventional milk. In its 2025 reporting, Danone highlighted continued innovation in digestive health and probiotics, including the expansion of its Activia kefir range. While not all digestive-health products are lactose-free, such developments illustrate how manufacturers are exploring differentiated dairy offerings around specific consumer needs.

For ASEAN processors, the next step is to establish which products can generate sufficient demand to justify investment. Adding lactase enzymes can break down lactose in milk, but manufacturers must assess processing requirements, flavour changes, quality testing, labelling obligations and production costs. The resulting milk may also taste sweeter because lactose is converted into simpler sugars.

Rather than launching an extensive range immediately, manufacturers could pilot lactose-free milk or selected dairy-based beverages, measuring repeat purchases, achievable pricing and production economics. Existing lines may offer opportunities for adaptation, subject to process compatibility and quality controls.

For ASEAN dairy manufacturers, lactose-free products offer an opportunity to diversify portfolios, reach new consumer segments and create additional value from existing production capabilities. By combining targeted product innovation with efficient processing and market-led positioning, manufacturers can build a stronger presence in this growing category while responding to evolving consumer preferences.
