World Refrigeration Day 2022: Why Cooling Matters

AHT and its parent company, DAIKIN, supports World Refrigeration Day. The aim is to focus on the cold chain supply and Cooling Matters.

What happens if there is a disruption in refrigeration and the cold chain system? Imagine it is a hot day. You realise that it is as hot in the supermarket as it is outside. This is because the air condition has stopped working. Foods such as milk, cheese and sausages are not available. Drinks are not chilled. Children do not get to enjoy ice cream.

This small thought experiment shows very well how we tend to take refrigeration for granted. Refrigeration technology is important to the supply chain, and we assume that it will always be around.  Only when everything stops working, do we realise how much this technology makes our lives easier.

The pandemic has shown how important it is to have a reliable cold chain system. This year´s theme “Cooling Matters” is apt in light of these challenging times. The role of cooling systems in everyday life is often underestimated. The use of state-of-the-art cooling technologies contributes significantly to environmental protection and to preventing climate change. Similarly, the cold chain system is pivotal in guaranteeing a safe and reliable supply of food, which prevents food waste. Other everyday goods depend on functioning cold chains as well. Thanks to the continuous expansion of their portfolio in recent years, AHT and DAIKIN can offer an unrivalled range of products and services as well as flexible end-to-end solutions. With its Active Monitoring System (AMS), AHT also ensures continuous monitoring of all AHT and third-party food retail devices, which also contributes significantly to the prevention of spoilage and therefore food wastage.

AHT has been using its “green” refrigerant R290 AHT in the field of green cooling years ago, which helped to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, propane (R290) has the lowest GWP of all refrigerants in the market. “With our new Active Monitoring System, we have developed a tool that allows our customers to monitor all their devices briefly to prevent food spoilage,” said AHT CEO Martin Krutz.

Why Cooling Matters:
• Cold chains save lives.
• We could avoid wasting 475 million tonnes of food with proper cooling systems.
• By 2050, humankind will need 60% more food.
