Unilever Prioritises Production Of Well Loved, Larger-Sized Products

Consumers are pantry stocking or “panic buying” amid the pandemic crisis—sweeping food and beverage products off local markets and grocers’ shelves to limit trips out of home in preparation of stay-at-home orders.

Unilever has announced that the company will prioritise restocking stores with larger sizes of its popular products such as ice cream, condiments and easy-to-prepare meals—foregoing other less popular products.

The consumer goods giant has seen “a substantial increase in purchases” for its food products, led by Knorr, condiments such as Hellmann’s and Sir Kensington’s, teas like Lipton and its ice creams. According to Nielsen, ice cream sales have risen 20 percent during the four-week period ended March 21 compared to 2019. Additionally, products such as canned foods and dairy have also reported increased sales during the same period.

“I think this has been a moment when companies really do have to step up. I think food through the beverage companies have a unique role to play because, let’s face it, we are the people that feed America,” expressed Jostein Solheim, Executive Vice President of foods and refreshment for North America, Unilever.

“As an industry, we have an important role in the crisis: to provide the food and as much normalcy as we can in terms of what’s available,” he continued.
