How Shelf-Life Demands Are Driving Aseptic Packaging Growth
Tuesday, September 29th, 2026
Aseptic packaging is gaining importance as food and beverage manufacturers look to extend shelf life, reduce reliance on refrigeration and reach more distant markets across Asia.
According to MarketsandMarkets, the global aseptic packaging market will reach US$123.76 billion by 2031, up from US$87.87 billion in 2026, representing a 7.09% CAGR. Asia Pacific accounted for 36.84% of the market in 2025, while beverages represented the largest application segment at 53.75%.
The technology is relevant to ASEAN manufacturers because ambient-stable products can simplify distribution across markets with varying cold-chain infrastructure. MarketsandMarkets highlights processed food exports as an opportunity for aseptic packaging, noting that the technology can reduce the need for continuous refrigeration during transport.
Applications extend beyond conventional UHT milk. Aseptic formats can support plant-based beverages, juices, wellness drinks and other liquid foods where shelf life and distribution efficiency are important. Cartons remain a major format, while bottles, cans, bags and pouches are also included in the market.
The investment hurdle is significant. MarketsandMarkets identifies high capital requirements for aseptic production as a restraint, with sterile filling equipment, heating systems, controlled environments and inspection systems adding to upfront and operational costs.
Sustainability also complicates packaging decisions. Multilayer structures can provide the required barrier performance but may present recycling challenges, while suppliers are developing recyclable barrier films, plant-based closures and other material solutions.
For ASEAN producers, the question is where shelf-life gains, lower logistics requirements and export opportunities can justify the investment, particularly for products targeting regional distribution and export markets.
