Scientex Moves To Expand Flexible Packaging Operations in China

Malaysia’s Scientex Bhd is proposing to acquire a 70% stake in China-based Hunan Changcheng Mint New Material Technology Co Ltd (Mintpack) for RM101.5 million, in a move that could further reshape the regional flexible packaging supply base.

Mintpack manufactures flexible plastic packaging, including bags and roll films. Malaysian media reported that the proposed acquisition would expand its consumer packaging footprint in China and provide an established local manufacturing platform and customer base.

For ASEAN food and beverage manufacturers, the development is relevant beyond the corporate deal itself. Flexible bags and roll films are widely used across food categories, making packaging capacity, local production and access to export markets important considerations for brand owners and contract manufacturers. Scientex said Mintpack’s existing capabilities could help it develop a new multinational customer base and expand into additional export markets.

“It provides Scientex Group with an established local manufacturing platform and customer base in China that complement the group’s existing consumer packaging business,” the company said in its Bursa Malaysia filing.

The proposed transaction also illustrates how packaging suppliers are building manufacturing networks across Asian markets rather than serving customers from a single production base. For food manufacturers in ASEAN, greater regional capacity could create additional sourcing options for flexible packaging, particularly for companies selling into China or managing multi-market supply chains.

However, the deal remains a proposal. The acquisition’s eventual impact on packaging capacity, customer coverage and regional supply chains will depend on completion and subsequent integration of Mintpack’s operations.
