Lactose Demand Expands Across Food and Beverage Applications

Wednesday, September 30th, 2026

The global lactose market is projected to grow from US$2.3 billion in 2026 to US$3.4 billion by 2036, with food and beverage manufacturers among the end users supporting demand, according to a report by Future Market Insights (FMI).

FMI forecasts a 4.1% compound annual growth rate for lactose sales over the period. Powder is expected to remain the dominant format, accounting for 93.4% of the form category in 2026, supported by its suitability for bulk handling, blending and standard formulation workflows.

For ASEAN food and beverage manufacturers, the most relevant opportunities extend beyond conventional dairy applications. FMI identifies food and beverage, bakery, confectionery and functional food among the market’s end-use categories, while demand for food-grade lactose is expected to grow in infant formula and functional foods across Asia Pacific. The report also points to prebiotic derivatives such as galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) as higher-value opportunities in premium infant nutrition.

Supply and qualification will remain important considerations. FMI says market growth is increasingly linked to grades that meet buyer qualification requirements and ship with complete documentation. Nitrite, microbial and change-control checks can lengthen qualification cycles, while supplier switching may involve additional costs.

The report also highlights lactose production from whey permeate streams, linking dairy processing with ingredient valorisation. For ASEAN manufacturers, this creates a broader ingredient story: lactose can serve not only as a formulation component but also as part of a more integrated dairy value chain.

FMI’s market definition covers lactose and listed derivatives sold as ingredients or pharmaceutical excipients, excluding finished foods, beverages and several adjacent products.
