“As a health-conscious individual, I sought drinks that harmonised with my lifestyle—low in calories, minimal sugar, and brimming with functional benefits,” said Chin, speaking exclusively to Asia Pacific Food Industry (APFI).

Chin’s vision for Mindful Drinks materialised from her quest for healthful beverages that did not compromise on taste or ecological responsibility. This led to the development of a proprietary technology capable of transforming spent coffee grounds, often regarded as waste, into a source of nourishment and delight.

“Recognising a niche in the functional beverage category, I envisioned crafting not only healthier but also delectable drinks, making them readily available to a broader audience,” she said.

The Upcycling Process: A Blend of Technology and Sustainability
Mindful Drinks’ process begins with the collection of spent coffee grounds from local cafes, a practice that not only supports the community but also contributes to a circular economy. The grounds undergo an extraction process, yielding a base for beverages that are not only rich in flavour but also offer functional benefits, particularly for gut health. However, “moving forward, we are targeting corporations and the hospitality sector,” said Chin.

The company’s product line currently includes coffee kombucha and sodas, each crafted to meet the growing demand for functional beverages. These products are a result of extensive research and a commitment to quality, emphasises Chin, ensuring that every sip offers a unique blend of health benefits and environmental mindfulness.

“It is a novel product that requires a fair bit of education. We are launching a range of more flavours in the future, so there are more choices and hopefully something for everyone, she said.

Mindful Drinks faces the challenge of educating consumers about the value of upcycled products. Through workshops, collaborations, and community engagement, the company aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in the food and beverage industry.
