With demand for food growing exponentially, the global food supply chain is under more pressure than ever. To keep up with requests and prevent shortages, all aspects of the supply chain must be operating efficiently, especially among rural suppliers.

Smallholder farmers are the backbone of rural food supply chains. However, they often face issues, including lack of government support, poverty, and declining agricultural communities that threaten their livelihoods. As we advance into the digital era, we must not forget about these vital players in our food systems.

Fortunately, advancements in high-tech solutions are revolutionising how rural food supply chains operate.

1. Technology Solutions in Agriculture
For centuries, agriculture has been a labour-intensive industry with farmers using traditional methods to produce their crops. However, the rapid advancements in technology have changed this landscape dramatically. Non-rural areas have embraced technology such as automated machinery, drones, and precision agriculture to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Now, this technology is being adapted to suit the needs of rural farmers that were previously left behind. These technologies aim to streamline processes and increase food production, making it easier for farmers to compete with larger organisations.

Precision Farming

In a multiple-case study conducted by Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, researchers utilised a methodology to collect data on Precision Farming (PF) from six farms. Findings indicate that farmers find PF beneficial for making decisions on their farms.

They especially value technologies that help gather information, like yield monitors and mapping, more than technologies for applying variable rates. This suggests that farmers prioritise tools that provide data and insights over those that directly manipulate farming practices.

Essentially, they see greater value in understanding their fields through data collection than in applying variable rates based on that data. These findings show how PF can enable better decisions and outcomes that may impact food production and the overall efficiency of the farm.

Cold Storage
Effective storage is vital for perishable items like fruits and vegetables to stop spoilage and uphold quality. However, many rural areas have limited access to reliable cold storage facilities. It is also a costly investment, especially for small-scale farmers in countries like Southeast Asia.

To bridge this gap, evaporative cooling systems are a cost-effective alternative. These systems use water to cool the surfaces, reducing the temperature through evaporation. By using local resources like water, farmers can now store their products without relying on expensive refrigeration equipment.

Solar-powered cold storage units are also becoming an option for farmers needing a more environmentally friendly solution. This type of technology relies on solar-powered units to keep food fresher for longer, as opposed to diesel-powered units.

This is especially necessary in communities that are directly impacted by pollution. The Kenyan-based company, Solar Freeze, offers mobile solar-powered cold storage units to small-scale farmers, with 80 percent of them being women.

Satellite Internet
In many rural areas, access to internet connectivity is limited. This can be a large obstacle for small-scale farmers who must stay updated on market prices and connect with potential buyers.

Starlink, a satellite-based internet service developed by SpaceX, may be the solution to this issue. Utilising cutting-edge technology like laser communication and radio signals, this worldwide satellite system delivers high-speed internet to the most isolated regions, bridging connectivity gaps in even the remotest areas of the world. This means that rural farmers, regardless of their location, can now access real-time data and resources critical for running their businesses.

A study by Research in Globalisation, involving 617 participants in Thailand, revealed that satellite internet has transformed professional growth in remote, rural, and underserved areas.

It has provided access to specialised resources that were previously inaccessible, revolutionising development opportunities. This advancement has enabled career growth and opportunities for individuals residing in remote regions.

The integration of high-tech solutions in the agricultural sector is levelling the playing field for these farmers, creating opportunities for growth and development. Additionally, it may also aid in achieving sustainable and inclusive food systems for all.

Preserving and improving rural food supply chains have numerous benefits, not just for farmers but also for consumers. Here are some of the advantages of implementing high-tech solutions:

This ensures that consumers can access safe and ethically grown food while fostering consumer trust in the food system.

This can lead to a more equitable and inclusive global food market, where smallholder farmers can compete with larger industrial farms since their products can now meet international standards and regulations.

Additionally, a sustainable supply chain can positively influence the health of local consumers. Sustainable and organic food is not grown with harmful fertilisers and pesticides, meaning that the people who buy this food are less likely to be exposed to harmful chemicals that can endanger their health and mental health.

Consumers can rest easy at night knowing that not only their well-being is in good hands with farmers, but they are also benefiting the planet by supporting a sustainable food supply chain.

As we continue to develop new solutions, it is vital to assess the needs and struggles of small-scale farmers in remote areas and work towards inclusive and equitable solutions that benefit all members of our global food system.
