Why ASEAN Manufacturers Should Prioritise Halal Packaging

Friday, September 11th, 2026

Halal compliance is increasingly extending beyond food ingredients and production processes to packaging materials and supply chains, creating new considerations for food manufacturers across ASEAN.

According to a new market study by Prismane Consulting, the global halal packaging market is projected to reach US$153.1 billion by 2034, expanding at a 7.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Asia Pacific currently dominates the market, led by Indonesia and Malaysia, while certification uptake is also expanding beyond food into pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

For food manufacturers, halal packaging involves more than selecting an appropriate pack format. Prismane defines halal-certified packaging as packaging produced using materials, adhesives, inks and processes verified to be free from alcohol- or animal-derived substances, supported by an audited chain of custody from raw material sourcing through to the finished pack.

Food and beverage is currently the leading application segment, with meat and poultry and processed food representing major areas of certification demand. Plastics, including polyethylene, polypropylene and PET, dominate due to their moisture resistance and suitability for formats such as pouches, trays and bottles.

The expanding market is also creating opportunities for established packaging suppliers. Companies covered by Prismane’s analysis include Amcor, Albéa Indonesia, Rootree, Huhtamaki, Constantia Flexibles, Mondi Group, Tetra Pak and ITP.

For ASEAN food manufacturers, the projected growth highlights the need to treat halal compliance as an end-to-end supply-chain consideration, bringing brands, packaging converters and material suppliers closer together as halal requirements and certification adoption expand.
