Barry Callebaut Opens Chocolate Facility In Mumbai

The Barry Callebaut Group has opened the doors to its new Callebaut Chocolate Academy centre and sales office in Mumbai, India. The facility will provide chefs, culinary professionals and confectionery artisans in India an opportunity to train and experiment with a comprehensive range of gourmet chocolate products.

Led by Callebaut’s chefs and professionals in the Chocolate Ambassadors Club, the centre will offer a range of workshops, courses and demonstrations for professional customers in all sectors. They will be able to benefit from the modern kitchen and the equipment that the academy is equipped with.

The centre is one of 19 training centres around the world managed by the chocolate maker’s gourmet division. It is one of only four in Asia Pacific, with the other centres located in Singapore, Shanghai and Tokyo.

The move follows Barry Callebaut’s opening of a chocolate factory in Pune last year. The company is hoping to tap into the country’s growing confectionery market.

According to Euromonitor, India is one the fastest growing confectionery markets globally (CAGR of 12 percent in the period 2015-2020). The average unit price in India grew by 8 percent in 2015 and premiumisation is expected to fuel chocolate sales further in India.

“With significantly greater exposure to international brands and product premiumisation, we believe there will be increasing demand for our gourmet products in India and across Asia Pacific,” said Mikael Neglen, President, Chocolate Asia Pacific, Barry Callebaut.
